What we have done
There are a number of challenges facing communities, both large and small, all across this great province and country. One of the biggest challenges is replacing & upgrading aging & outdated infrastructure systems. Different areas continue to experience the impact on the quality of life these deteriorating public infrastructures have on residents. Most of which are critical in delivering basic services such as transportation, water, sewer, and environmental protection.
The Town of Melita has taken a proactive approach to this challenge.
Since 2011, with financial support from the Province of Manitoba and the Federal Government, we have replaced 12 complete blocks of water and sewer lines which included all the service connections, valves, and hydrants at a cost of about $4 million. These water and sewer lines, originally installed in either the late 1940’s or 1950’s, were due for rehabilitation. In 2015, we completed construction of a new 4.5 kilometer flood protection dike at a cost of about $6 million. This environmental protection is a necessity due to the damages incurred in recent flooding incidents experienced by the Town. Currently, we are in the process of rebuilding our lagoon system including lift stations. These infrastructure projects are essential to our population sustainability and future growth of our community.
Reasons to visit and stay
The Town of Melita is a great little town with a lot to offer. Our community is safe, welcoming, and it provides a good environment to live in.
Known as the Hub of the Southwest, we have a diverse and thriving business sector that provides a wide range of goods and services to the area from construction supplies, auto parts & services, groceries, personal care, and shopping. We have a number of fine eating establishments to choose from: a local bakery, cafe with home-cooked meals, locally owned family restaurants, and fast-food options. For tourists and visitors, we have different types of accommodations available: a 64-room hotel, 26-room motel, and short/long term room rentals at present. Our modern campground equipped with new bathroom facilities is busy with campers during summertime.
Staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential to the overall wellbeing of our community. We offer some of the best recreational facilities in the Southwest. One of the most popular is our beautiful and challenging nine-hole golf course. We likewise have one of the nicest swimming pools in the district. There are three different exercise facilities in the community. For nature lovers and explorers, we have a very scenic system of walking trails. Considered as an Important Birding Area, Melita is the trail-head of the north and south birding trails in the Southwest corner. Our parks and several playgrounds are well-utilized. Various indoor recreational activities are available from our four-sheet curling rink, hockey arena, and bowling alley. Our active Arts Council provides opportunities in dance, art, cultural entertainment complemented with a modern movie theatre. We are in the process of revitalizing our River Park area with modern booth, stage area, and four ball diamonds.
Our annual Melita Banana Days Festival in August attracts several visitors participating in different family/sports activities and entertainment. Community organizations lead year-round programs geared towards kids, youth, adults and seniors.
There is definitely something for everyone. We do have as much to offer as any community.
