Garbage

Curb-side pickup for commercial and domestic garbage is on Tuesday & Friday of each week.

What can and cannot be picked up: Furniture or anything that wouldn’t fit in with your household garbage.

Yard waste is specified by the town, and a pick-up date is usually posted in local paper.

Landfill

Four acres of garbage disposal / landfill located 3 km S.E. of town limits.

  • Summer Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday 1:00 pm-8:00 pm

                                       Friday 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

                                       Saturday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

                                       Sunday 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

  • Winter Hours: Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Closed for all stat holidays.

Current methods and rates make the site adequate for the future. Further adjacent land is available.

Nuisance Grounds Annual Tipping fees effective July.1, 2012. Passes are required by property owner to enter nuisance grounds and dispose of garbage. Residential costs are $12.50 til January and 25.00 in the New Year. Commercial/Contractor is $100.00 and $200.00 in the New Year. This allows for disposal of all materials exept freezers/fridges. This requires a receipt for freon removal of $50.00 from the Town of Melita or a certified copy from a qualified technician.

This is not applicable to RM of Arthur residents with primary residence in the Arthur Municipality.

E-Waste can be taken to  Virden Depot Mon-Fri from 8:00-3:00 daily located at 1185-5th Ave. South Virden, MB.

Water Supply, Reservoir and Treatment Facility

Water treatment is a combination of greensand and osmosis; resulting in excellent drinking water and not requiring further water softening for residential use.

Water Distribution

  • Average flow - 90,000 gallons/day.
  • Design flow - 160,000 gallons/day.
  • Iron (Fe) is removed, fluoride is added.
  • Chlorine (Cl), is added to Melita's water supply, as in most other towns in Manitoba.
  • No constraints on future system expansion, as needs may demand.

Sewer

  • Type of treatment - 3-cell lagoon FAC.
  • Average flow - 100,000 / 200,000 gallons/day.
  • Design flow - 250,000 gallons/day.
  • Two lift stations under grade the system.
  • No constraints on future system expansion, as needs may demand.
