Parks and Campground

River Park Campground

River Park is located just north of the junction of HWY 3 & 83, along the Souris River. The park contains a canteen booth used for special events, as well as a covered stage area. The 6 ball diamonds, all with built in dugouts, are used by both Boys and Girls Minor Ball, Girls Softball, and Adult Slow Pitch teams. The park is also used for school functions and community events, including the annual July 1 Canada Day Celebrations, organized by the Chamber of Commerce. The local Melita & Area Fire Department supervises the accompanying fireworks display. 

A Boat Launch area to the Souris River has been built on the east side of the park.

A Walking Path for the park and riverbank area is currently in the planning/ construction stage under the direction of a trail committee reporting to the Economic Development Board. (see Walking Trails/Cross-country Skiing).

River Park Campground is located off Highway 83 just south of the railway tracks in a treed location to the west of the ball diamonds.  25 clean and serviced sites (2 - 50amp; 7 - 30amp; 15 - 15amp). Unserviced lots also available.  Rates by day, week, month or season.  Located in Melita near the Souris River adjacent the ball diamonds.

Amenities include R.V. parking, picnic tables, boat launch to the Souris River, fire pits with wood supplies, showers, heated washrooms, and a nearby dumping station.  Current rates are:

  • $20 per night - un-serviced
  • $25 per night - services (15 & 30 Amp)
  • $30 per night - services (50 Amp 2 sites available)
  • The monthly rate is $500.00 for 15 and 30 amp services
  • Plans for servicing some lots with sewer connections, and the addition of some coin-operated showers to the washrooms should be completed for the 2011 season.

Morrow Park

Located on Main Street, Morrow Park contains park benches, picnic tables, a play center and many trees and flowers. Public washrooms were also added in the summer of 1997. Morrow Park will be used by local youngsters or those wanting a quiet sit during a long afternoon of shopping. Morrow Park opened on July 13, 1996.

ParkCentral Park

Located in the heart of Melita. It contains playground equipment and three ball diamonds which are used for both Little League and T-Ball practices and games.  Central Park is also used for a variety of school, church and community picnics and windups.

The cenotaph is a war memorial located in Central Park. The cenotaph is 9 ft. high and is sided with marble panels listing the names of those who died during the South African War (1899 - 1902), World War I (1914 - 1918), World War II (1939 - 1945) , and the Korean War (1950 - 1953).  It was first dedicated ton November 11, 1931 and then rededicated to veterans of World War II.  In the summer of 1933 a plaque was added remembering the veterans of the South African War and the Korean War.
